About this deal

Reach out with little acts of kindness where you can; a warm hello, a compliment to someone who is looking sad… it offers hope for a more resilient future for us all, together. A medium-crumbly texture - is ideal. Composts that are too fine are prone to water logging, while those that are too coarse tend to need more frequent watering. A crumbly structure will allow excess water to drain through, while holding enough water and air for roots to thrive. The introduction of comfrey to the compost mix marks the culmination of a five-year project by the Dalefoot team to grow the plant on a commercial scale, sustainably on the farm, and harness its extraordinary qualities. The fast-growing comfrey crop can be harvested four times a year, so there is plenty on tap to meet rising demand for the company’s premium composts in the future. November is a key time for focusing on wildlife in the garden. As temperatures plummet and day light decreases, it’s good to spend some time outside ensuring the creatures who share our gardens with us have food, water and shelter to survive the long winter months ahead. Getting some “vitamin G” as well as much needed vitamin D during the daytime helps with mental and physical health and well being.

Take cuttings from soft fruit bushes and pot them up, root mint cuttings in water to create indoor plants, or pot up spider plant runners as presents Peatlands have been doing this for many thousands – and in some case many millions of years, with peat being the precursor to coal formation, which is almost pure carbon. Watch out for reformulated compost - manufacturers frequently change the mix of ingredients they use and the fertiliser, and this is speeding up as the ban on using peat comes ever closer. We can't recommend reformulated brands because there's no guarantee the new product will perform as well as the one we tested. Always use the images above to make sure the Best Buy compost you are buying is the one we have tested.Do not feed your tomatoes - Wool Compost for Tomatoes has all the feed your plants need to produce their crop through the season. Growing tomatoes outdoors: Healthy soil is crucial for a healthy planet, and growing using no dig gardening methods is a key way that we can help to create and maintain a vibrant soil ecosystem. Soil is the largest sequester of carbon on the planet. Digging releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, so one of the simplest ways we can all help to reduce climate change is to stop digging.

Many existing varieties of crop may struggle in the future with climate change so see what others are growing well in your area. Reach out to local gardening groups, share ideas and swap seeds. This week we heard from Frances at Clodhopper Blooms and how she has been using our composts in her business specialising in seasonal cut Flowers grown in Kirkby Stephen Cumbria... Supplement wild seeds and berries with homemade fat and peanut balls, bird seed and fruit. If you are planning to feed the birds it is important to be consistent, so that hungry birds don’t waste precious energy visiting empty feeders. I make fat balls in muffin tin moulds, or for a fancier look, stuff old tea cups with the mix and hang from a tree branch or bird table. Always keep bird feeding areas as clean as possible to prevent spread of disease, and supply plenty of fresh water daily. To gently firm the compost, I did the “No Dig Dance”! This is a gentle dance on the bed to make sure all of the compost is firm. In a pan, gently heat the vinegar, water, salt and sugar (if using) and simmer until everything has dissolved.Having chosen your method and growing position water your seedlings well the day before planting. Growing tomatoes indoors: Although temperatures may be sliding, it’s still not too late to get your spring bulbs into pots, containers or straight into the ground. Just remember, to plant them three times their height and try using Dalefoot’s Bulb Compost. Due to its natural free draining properties, it’ll prevent bulbs from rotting if left in heavy soil.

What a year it has been! Extreme weather is stressful ….for gardens and gardeners alike. Yet growing some lovingly home-nurtured, organic food is a positive action in the face of climate change. Helping to boost biodiversity in our outside spaces and enabling us, even for a time, to switch off from the horrible things happening in the world. Mycorrhizal fungi enter into the roots of plants, sometimes even going into the actual cells themselves. This connects the plant to the incredible web of hyphae under the soil, which acts like a secondary root system. The fungi can hunt down nutrients and water for the plant, using its tiny strands to penetrate parts of the soil inaccessible to plant roots. Plants can even make chemical requests to fungi for specific nutrients to aid their growth and health. When we have aggregates in our soil, it opens spaces between called pores. Pores allow water to move through the layers in the soil and will enable the ground to hold air, which is essential for root respiration. The aggregates

I find it a lot easier to use cup measures for this recipe, rather than weighing everything out. If you don’t have US cup measures, just use a tea cup. Peat is a rich, dark type of soil that is made mostly of plant matter that has been decomposed under waterlogged conditions. It is incredibly rich in carbon but very low in nutrients. It has excellent water-retentive properties and a nice crumbly texture making it an apparently desirable commodity for gardeners.
